How to Put Muzzle on Aggressive TV Channels in Russia?

Movement of Young Peacemakers worked out another project to support struggle of civic society against TV channels broadcasting scenes of violence and killings at children prime time. The project named "Young Peacemakers Against Violence on TV Screen" provides for a few TV debates to be organized between young peacemakers and the representatives of TV channels broadcasting terrifying movies. The aim of the project is to raise an awareness of Russian society and to attract attention of rulling circles to the negative effects of demonstration of violence scenes on TV screens upon children and youth.

Young Peacemakers Took the Oath to Strengthen Peace

Over 100 delegates of Russian ministries and organizations took part in the meeting organized by the Museum of Peacekeeping Operations in cooperation with the UN Information Center in Moscow on the occasion of the International Peacekeepers Day May 26 at Moscow House of NGOs. The meeting began with awarding the winners of the First Russian contest "UN Peacekeeper of the Year" with the special diplomas and was closed with the oath to strengthen peace given by the group of scholars which passed the exams in Young Peacemaker's Program. Government Awarded 18 Young Peacemakers

In May Government of Moscow awarded young peacemakers with free trips to Bulgaria and the Crimea for their social and philanthropic activity in 2004. By decision of the Coordinating Council of the Movement of Young Peacemakers 8 persons representing Nothern, North-Eastern and South-Eastern administrative districts of Moscow will go to Republic of Bulgaria, while other 10 representing Eastern and South-Western districts of Moscow and Moscow region will spend 19 days in children camp in the Republic of Crimea. By the beginning of 2004 the Movement of Young Peacemakers numbered around 1 200 children and adults interested in study of peacekeeping experience of the United Nations.

How to Find the List of Perished Russian Peacekeepers?

Lawyer Rustem Zarbeev in his letter to the Museum asked the question: How to find the list of Russian peacekeepers who served with the UN missions, as well as the list of the perished peacekeepers? His idea is to try to provide members of the families of perished Russian peacekeepers with the assistance of a lawyer. Spring Activities of Young Peacemakers

Over 150 young peacemakers took part in Spring events, organized by the Council of Children NGOs of Moscow namely: a) Train of Memory devoted to the 60-th anniversary of the liberation of Belorussia (Moscow-Minsk-Brest-Moscow) from May 1 to May 4; b) Organization of school of leaders of children NGO from May 7 to May 11; c) Meeting of Moscow government with veterans of World War-2 May 7; d) Guards of Honor near the Monument to Moscow, the Hero-City May 8 and May 9; e) Visiting the Museum of T-34 tank May 8; f) Visiting the Museum of Fighters from Siberia May 8. Winners of the First Russian Contest "UN Peacekeeper of the Year"

Final session of the First Russian Contest "Peacekeeper of the Year" took place in the UN Information Center in Moscow April 28, 2004. As the result of the voting there were elected two candidates in the following nominations: a)Lieutenant Colonel of Militia Anatoly Didenko as Russian UN Civpol of 2004; b)Lieutenant Colonel in res. Eugene Komlyakov as Russian UN Peacekeeping Veteran of 2004. Both winners will get their diplomas at the official ceremony to take place during the celebration of the International Day of UN Peacekeepers in Moscow May 26, 2004. Children and Violence from TV Screen

The idea to send open letter "Stop the Violence on TV Screens" to President Vladimir Putin was formulated by the 3-rd conference "Civic Society to Children of Russia" in December 2003. Later on a few NGOs, members of the Union of NGOs "Civic Society to Children of Russia" started the campaign of collecting signatures under the text of the letter in the city of Yaroslavl and in the city Moscow. So far the letter was supported by thousands of citizens of Russia while the subject itself became the key point of the report delivered by Tatyana Shakhnovskaya, chairwoman of the Ecology of Childhood Fund at the stage of the "Russian Family" Congress held in Moscow a few weeks ago. Jubilee Edition of the Book "In the Service of Peace"

The 3-rd edition of the book devoted to the 30-th anniversary of Russian participation in UN peacekeeping was issued by the Museum of Peacekeeping Operations April 15, 2004. The book under the title "In the Service of Peace. 1973-2003" contains the list of names of Russian peacekeepers for the period since 1973. Due to efforts of former Russian civpols Yuri Bogomolov and Alexander Borisov one can find in the book the complete list of Russian civpols for the period from 1992 to 2003. The special part of the book is devoted to the Movement of Young Peacemakers (children and youth interested in study of UN peacekeeping experience and in its emplementation in everyday life) which appeared for the first time in Russia in 1998 and is rapidly developing in the framework of the Decade of Culture of Peace and Tolerance in the Interests of Children of the Planet (2001-2010). Club of Young Peacemakers won the Second Place in Moscow Contest

Olga Milwid, leader of Young Peacemakers' Club of the Secondary School # 1148 won the second place in Moscow contest of leaders of school classes. The contest was carried out as a part of all-Moscow Contest "Best Teacher of 2004" and requested a lot of efforts both from Olga Milwid and from all members of her team. In fact the contest became the competition of teaching concepts. Therefore one can draw a conclusion that teaching concept based on Peace Education is one of the most requested now in the capital of Russia.

Council of Children

Council of children was formed during the first two days of Spring camp (from April 1 to April 4, 2004) organized in the suburbs of Moscow by Movement of Young Peacemakers for 200 children and youth from 25 different NGOs. The idea was formulated for the first time during the discussion of the camp program in March and was successfully implemented by Irina Barchunova, the deputy of principal of the Secondary school # 271. On April 2 the council of children came out with the proposal to organize "the day of self-government". And after getting OK ("Roger") from Valery Guerguel, superviser of the camp has organized sporting competitions, games and performances. For the details see the photo report.
