MILITARY CHIEF OF UN MISSION IN LEBANON HOLDS MEETINGS WITH LOCAL AUTHORITIES
New York, May 4 2007 4:00PM The military head of the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon today began a series of meetings with local authorities in the south of the country, the start of a concerted effort by the peacekeeping mission to strengthen its relationships with the communities where it operates. UNIFIL Force Commander Maj.-Gen. Claudio Graziano held a meeting in the town of Tyre with the mayor, other representatives of the area's municipal authorities, as well as local parliamentarians and members of the Lebanese Armed Forces (LAF). There were also representatives of the Italian, Ghanaian, French, Turkish, Chinese and Portuguese UNIFIL contingents deployed in the Tyre area... UNICEF CONDEMNS INDISCRIMINATE MORTAR ATTACK ON SOMALI HOSPITAL
New York, Apr 27 2007 7:00PM The United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) today condemned a mortar attack on a hospital in the Somali capital Mogadishu, which has been wracked by escalating violence in recent weeks. "We deplore the indiscriminate shelling of a medical facility," said Christian Balslev-Olesen, UNICEF's Representative in Somalia. "It is an action that is totally unacceptable and one for which no justification can be given." According to UN estimates, 340,000 people - roughly one-third of the city's population - have fled the deadly clashes in the capital Mogadishu since the start of February, and this number is expected to increase as more information becomes available... EUROPEAN UNION INCREASES CONTRIBUTION TO UN AGENCY FOR PALESTINIAN REFUGEES
New York, Apr 20 2007 7:00PM The United Nations agency tasked with helping Palestinian refugees and the European Union signed an agreement today paving the way for the EU to contribute 66 million euro to help pay salaries for teachers, doctors, social workers and others as part of the relief effort. The agreement means essential services to Palestinians can be maintained, the UN Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East press release from Jerusalem... EXTENDING UN MISSION IN GEORGIA FOR SIX MONTHS, SECURITY COUNCIL URGES DIALOGUE
New York, Apr 13 2007 7:00PM Stressing the need for dialogue between the Government and Abkhaz sides in Georgia, where fighting 14 years ago drove nearly 300,000 people from their homes, the Security Council today extended the United Nations mission in the country for another 6 months until 15 October. In a resolution adopted unanimously, the 15-member body also condemned the attack on villages in the upper Kodori valley on 11-12 March and urged all sides to fully support the ongoing investigation conducted by the Joint Fact Finding Group, which is led by the UN Observer Mission in Georgia. TIMOR-LESTE: UN REPORTS CALM AHEAD OF ELECTIONS
New York, Apr 6 2007 11:00PM The United Nations Mission in Timor-Leste (UNMIT) today reported that the capital, Dili, and surrounding areas remained calm as presidential campaigning officially ended ahead of Monday's historic elections in the impoverished country. In other parts of the country, the mission said the only reported incident took place yesterday near Manatuto, where opposing campaigners clashed, prompting the police, after negotiation efforts failed, to use tear gas and rubber bullets to disperse the fighting crowd. The head of the UN Mission in Timor Leste Atul Khare praised the efforts of the UN Police and officers from the Bangladeshi Formed Police Unit who responded quickly to bring the situation under control... HUMAN RIGHTS COUNCIL SETS UP INDEPENDENT MONITORING GROUP ON DARFUR
New York, Mar 30 2007 6:00PM The United Nations Human Rights Council today agreed to set up a group of independent rights experts to work with the Sudanese Government and the African Union (AU) to monitor the situation on the ground in the war-torn Darfur region. In a resolution adopted by consensus, the 47-member Council voiced "deep concern regarding the seriousness of the ongoing violations of human rights and international humanitarian law in Darfur," citing armed attacks on civilians and humanitarian workers, the widespread destruction of villages and the lack of accountability for the perpetrators of gender-based violence against women and girls... BAN KI-MOON URGES IMMEDIATE CESSATION OF HOSTILITIES IN SOMALIA
New York, Mar 24 2007 4:00PM As fighting flared in Somalia, United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon today called for an immediate cessation of hostilities and steps towards an inclusive political process that can lead to genuine national reconciliation. I am greatly concerned at the conflict that has ravaged Somalia in the past few days, especially in Mogadishu," Mr. Ban said in a statement released in Cairo, where he is on an official visit. "This has resulted in the death of innocent civilians and the displacement of a large number of people from their homes." MASKED GUNMEN ATTACK UN CONVOY IN GAZA STRIP
New York, Mar 16 2007 4:00PM Masked gunmen ambushed and opened fire on a three-vehicle United Nations convoy in the Gaza Strip today shortly after it left the crossing point with Israel carrying a senior official of the main UN agency for Palestinian refugees, but all the passengers and drivers escaped injury. The director of the UN Relief and Works Agency Field Office in Gaza, John Ging, was leaving the Erez crossing point for Gaza City when a vehicle blocked the convoy about one kilometre to the south in what agency Commissioner-General Karen Koning AbuZayd called "this unprecedented attack on UN staff in Gaza." IBRAHIM GAMBARI NAMED NEW UN ADVISOR ON INTERNATIONAL COMPACT WITH IRAQ
New York, Mar 2 2007 4:00PM Ibrahim Gambari of Nigeria, the former head of the United Nations Department for Political Affairs, was today named Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon's Special Advisor on the International Compact with Iraq and Other Political Issues. "The Secretary-General values Mr. Gambari's recent service to the Organization as Under-Secretary-General for Political Affairs and he looks forward to working with him in this new capacity," Mr. Ban's spokesperson, Michele Montas, said in a statement announcing the appointment... BAN KI-MOON WELCOMES PROGRESS ON CLUSTER MUNITIONS
New York, Feb 24 2007 11:00AM Reacting to a new declaration on cluster munitions, United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon has welcomed all progress to reduce the devastating humanitarian impact of these arms. The Declaration signed on Friday by a group of nations attending the Oslo conference on Cluster Munitions envisages the conclusion next year of a new agreement banning cluster munitions that cause "unacceptable harm to civilians," a spokesperson for Mr. Ban said in a statement. "The Secretary-General welcomes all progress to reduce and ultimately eliminate the horrendous humanitarian effects of these weapons," the statement said...
